Abbey Men’s Basketball Defeats Lees-McRae, 78-64
January 5th, 2012The Crusaders were led by junior guard Tyshawn Good’s team high 26 points.
The Belmont Abbey men’s basketball eased their way to a 78-64 victory at Lees-McRae Tuesday night on the strength of a 26-point performance by junior guard Tyshawn Good. With the win the Crusaders improve to 8-4 overall and 2-0 in conference play while Lees-McRae falls to 0-9 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
The Crusaders, which led by as many as 24 and only trailed once, zoomed out to a 5-0 lead in the first half before a 7-0 run gave Lees-McRae their only lead of the game at 7-5. A 9-0 Crusader run followed to make the score 14-7. The Crusaders continued to build the lead and gained their largest advantage of the half on junior guard Terrone Sheffey’s layup with 1:10 left to make it 31-15. The Crusader advantage stood at 31-17 at the half.
The second half began much as the first as the Crusaders scored the first six points to move the lead to 21. Senior forward Matthew Graves’s layup at the 12:51 mark gave the Crusaders their largest lead of the contest at 49-25. The Abbey never lead by less than 13 in the second half, as the final tally was 78-64.
The Crusaders were led by Good’s team high 26 points and two steals. Graves contributed the only other double digit scoring effort with 12 points. And, sophomore forward Darryl Durham pitched in a team high eight rebounds.
