Abbey Fraternity Wins National Awards For Intellectual And Spiritual Development
August 17th, 2011The Abbey’s Alpha Rho Chapter was singled out from among 52 chapters nationwide for the honors.
Belmont Abbey College’s Alpha Rho Chapter of Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity picked up two major awards at the fraternity’s recent national conference in Indianapolis: the Intellectual Development Award and the Spiritual Development Award.
The Abbey’s Alpha Rho Chapter was singled out from among 52 chapters nationwide for the honors.
Chapter President John Hohenstein cited several factors that were key to the Abbey’s “Phi Kaps” earning the awards. “We were honored with the Intellectual Development Award mostly thanks to our overall GPA – one of the highest chapter GPA averages nationwide – and for our determination to provide study halls and tutoring to brothers who show interest, as well as for our incentive program to lower dues for the brother who has the highest GPA,” said Hohenstein. “And it was through our brothers’ dedication to spend many weekly hours in the Abbey’s St. Joseph Adoration Chapel, to provide weekly Alpha Rho Chapter Bible studies, and to conduct seminars with Abbey alumni who work with spiritual retreat centers that we were fortunate enough to win the Spiritual Development Award.”
Hohenstein says the Abbey’s Alpha Rho Chapter hopes to use the awards as incentive to further improve themselves in intellectual and spiritual development, as well as in other areas.
Known as “The Catholic Fraternity,” Phi Kappa Theta was established in 1959, and the first chapter chartered was at Belmont Abbey College. Today the Abbey boasts over 600 Phi Kappa Theta alumni, several of whom are on the Abbey’s Wall of Fame.
