Welcome to one of the few colleges in America that believes in educating
the whole person: mind, body and spirit.
Mind
In Memory Of Father John Oetgen, O.S.B.: 1924-2009
October 12th, 2009He taught us how to live and how to die. And in a 2008 interview, he taught us what it means to be Benedictine.
The Abbey family lost one of its giants this past Saturday. Father John Oetgen, O.S.B. passed away after a long illness. (His funeral Mass is at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 13 at the Abbey basilica.)
Father John was many things – former president of Belmont Abbey College, director of the Abbey Players, beloved English professor, priest, monk, confidant, friend – but perhaps above all, he was a consummate teacher.
A little over a year ago, we had the privilege of interviewing Father John on a broad range of topics for our alumni magazine, Crossroads. As a tribute to our beloved friend, we thought it might be appropriate to offer a link to that interview.
Father John taught us a lot. He continues to teach us still.
